Clear Mask
by WET Design
Introduction
During the COVID-19 shutdown, WET was identified as a key local manufacturer capable of providing some of the desperately needed PPE supplies. In keeping with WET’s mission to connect people and experiences, we took on the challenge of creating a clear mask that would allow people see each others faces again.
Problem
We quickly discovered how desirable a product like this was particularly in the special education and speech therapy communities. For those relying on lip reading and seeing facial emotions for communication, regular masks just do not cut it. One of the key problems we faced with this direction was the fogging that occurs when you put anything in front of your nose and mouth for extended periods of time.
Solution
WET CLEAR was designed primarily for optimal filtration protection from viruses, but also to keep as much of the face visible as was possible. We went through many dozens of iterations to develop the optimally contoured shape for a universal fit. We also went through many iterations of filter types and sizes to find this balance of protection and visual connection. As we worked with our engineering and production teams we discovered very effective anti-fogging solutions that we used to create a protective coating on the masks. We also explored various means of production between vacuum forming and injection molding the clear PETG material. The filters were designed to be replaceable in order to get as many uses out of one mask as possible.
